Mark G. recommends this wine.
This absolutely stunning Chardonnay! The nose offers an array of pleasing citrus and stone fruit aromas, including lemon, line pith, and peach. On the palate, the wine has terrific texture and richness yet is in no manner heavy. Lime, peach, and pear flavors blend with a “stoniness” to create an intriguing palate. Winemaker Greg Brewer used only neutral oak barrels for this wine, so the fruit shines brightly without any oakiness. The acidity in this wine is laser-focused and really gets your palate ready for some food. This level of quality in Chardonnay is generally seen in wines costing two to three times as much.
Ripe orchard fruits, butted lemon, crushed stone, and salty, marine-influence notes all emerge from the 2021 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills is a concentrated, medium- to full-bodied Chardonnay with a liquid rock-like sense of minerality, beautiful mid-palate density, and a great finish. You should never underestimate these appellation releases from Greg Brewer. This is an insane value in top Chardonnay from California.
What We Thought: This elegant, deftly balanced Central Coast Chardonnay displays notes of ripe pear and a little oaky vanilla over a medium-bodied palate supported by some underlying minerality and bright acidity that keeps it ready for a glass before dinner or as a nice seafood pairing.
