Mark Gapinski Recommends This Wine:
I can’t recall ever tasting an Assyrtiko that wasn’t from the Greek Island of Santorini. This version is from Australia’s Clare Valley, famed for its Rieslings. This Aussie version has a lot going on! It’s much more aromatic than I expected with some lovely floral aromas. The very appealing, rich texture on the palate is more typical of Assyrtiko. Overall a delicious wine that, like its Greek counterpart, would be a great match for lighter seafood dishes.
The 2019 Assyrtiko shows a bit more perfume than previous vintages, including some floral notes alongside lime and green plums. It’s medium-bodied, with a slightly grainy, rich texture and a long, crisp finish. —J.C.
