Saint Péray is the rising star of Rhône Valley. It is a small, high altitude appellation just south of Cornas. Rousanne from 80 year old vines is blended with Marsanne in this classic blend. La Belle de Mail means “The Beauty of May” and reflects this spectacular appellation site
It starts out broad, with ripe crushed yellow apple and pear puree laced with clove and nutmeg, yet this shows nice direction on the creamy palate, thanks to savory herbs, salted butter, and mineral lift. It reveals verbena, white pepper, and chamomile that add range, while succulent acidity and a pronounced quinine note give shape to the finish. Roussanne and Marsanne. Drink now through 2027. —K.B.
What We Thought: A dramatic honeysuckle and stone fruit nose leads to a palate that manages to be rich and viscous without cloying. It's filled with flavors of lemon custard and ripe apricot with notes of orange peel and spice and a clean, bright finish.
