The “Clos la Pousse d’Or” is a Premier Cru monopole. Exclusively owned by Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, the plot is enclosed by a stone wall and planted just below the Volnay town hall. Its clay-limestone soil is typical of the appellation. Aged in oak barrels for 15 months, 30% of which are new. The result is simply breathtaking: minty cocoa, four spices, pencil shavings, refined bacon, cedar, and fresh rose. The palate is precise and remarkably diffuse, with savory tannins and an endless finish.
I very much like the texture of the beautifully refined middleweight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that displays excellent length. This could use better depth but that should only be a matter of patience. –C.C.
Here's What We Thought:
This wine shows up well-dressed but relaxed: it opens with juicy cherry and raspberry, a hint of flowers, and a silky glide that feels polished without trying too hard. It’s light, approachable, quietly complex, and leaves you reaching for another sip with a smile. Pairs perfectly with herb-crusted roast chicken, soy-glazed mushrooms, duck confit, or a fancy grilled cheese with Comté. Elegant enough for a dinner party, fun enough that you’ll forget to save the last glass. 🍷
