Crimson red with a magenta hue in the glass, this wine opens with intense aromas of rich dark fruit, mocha, and garden herbs. The palate displays rich black cherry and blackberry fruits with mocha like oak and hints of aniseed. A wine of great complexity and power, finishing firm and oaky with persistent sweet fruit length.
Explosive, spicy and punchy with a lovely attack and impressive, dry tannins, this has blossomed into a work of rare art. —M.J.
Opens with a nose of black walnut liqueur, dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee, palo santo, salted caramel and nutmeg that swirls around a core of ripe, fleshy spiced plum, black cherry and cassis flavors. The tannins are plush and polished, lending an elegant air to this powerful wine. Tremendous finish. —M.W.
The 2014 The Armagh Shiraz boasts intense aromas of vanilla, cedar and boysenberries. It's a full-bodied, creamy-ripe wine, big and rich, yet it's held together by bright acids, with 20 years of potential ageability. The Armagh vineyard Shiraz isn't that old by South Australian standards, having been planted in 1968, but it consistently yields one of Clare's top Shiraz bottlings. —J.C.
This vintage of The Armagh, the Barry family's most premium wine, is intensely concentrated with lifted earthy, umami aromas like charred beetroot and dried mint that sit alongside the plush plum and blueberry fruit and chocolaty oak. Typical to Clare, there's an almost surprising lift of acidity on the palate that comes to the rescue. Powerful, talc-like tannins weave the plump fruit and herbs together. This is a beast of a wine, but it's a well-structured beast that will age for several decades. —C.P.
