What We Thought: This has a big black cherry nose and an exceptionally smooth, medium-bodied palate of more black cherry and a little plum, along with notes of black pepper and licorice supported by supple tannins and some food-friendly acidity.

The nose starts with a balance between mixed berries and an herbaceous earthiness, then a hint of chocolate emerges. The palate is laden with cherries and blackberries, but also has a more metallic earthiness that’s highlighted by dusty, chalky tannins and buoyant acid. —D.G.
