The original vineyard is located near Gesualdo, not far from Paternopoli, next to an old onyx quarry. The color of the streaks in the quarried stones is reflected in the name and nuances of Nativ's Blu Onice Aglianico Irpinia DOC, a red wine with aromas of the typical Maiatica cherry of the Agro Taurasino, spices, and roasted coffee beans. Aged in French oak barrels, it perfects its complexity and structure.
Coffee-stained black-cherry aromas and flavors here. Full-bodied with an insistent core of fluid, almost syrupy fruit. A slightly cloying expression of Aglianico. Old-school in nature. But fun to drink now.
Here's What We Thought:
Ruby red in the glass, this wine comes in bold with aromas of black cherry, dark plum, and a streak of volcanic minerality. The palate is smooth with ripe tannins and a long, warm oaky-spice finish. It's perfect with blue cheeses, or let it shine alongside braised short ribs, grilled lamb, or a hearty mushroom ragù. Decant it and let it show off a little—you’ll be glad you did.
