The Monastery Block is located on the western side of To Kalon Vineyard, nestled against the foothills of the Mayacamas adjacent to the Carmelite monastery from which it takes its name. The wine is produced from select clones of Cabernet Sauvignon–685, 31, & 169–and is planted on well-drained gravelly soils, showing a classic Oakville expression that balances rich black fruit with minerality and a floral component. Elegant and classically styled, this wine is generous, layered, and fresh.
The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard Monastery Block comes from a smaller parcel of this block and is a region that Thomas feels is clearly superior dirt. Deep purple-hued, with an absolutely insane nose of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, lead pencil, and crushed stone, it has a First Growth Pauillac-like stature on the palate and is full-bodied, with building tannins and flawless balance. This brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon is going to require patience, but it’s worth it.
Schrader's 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Monastery Block To Kalon Vineyard is a step up over the outstanding 2022. Exuberant florals—violets and thyme—form an ethereal layer above a base of ripe black cherries, while the full-bodied palate is rich and supple, so smooth and refined, with a silky, softly tannic and long-lasting finish. —J.C.
What We Thought:
This Cabernet enters like a superstar—ripe dark fruit, molten chocolate, and silky tannins making every sip a showstopper. Blackberry compote, cassis, and warm spice mingle with that iconic To Kalon intensity, while the 2023 vintage brings a bright, lifted energy that keeps it dazzling. The finish is endless and opulent. Pairs perfectly with wagyu ribeye, pepper-crusted lambchops, or decadent truffle burgers. For a twist, try it with aged gouda, dark chocolate with sea salt, or a moody jazz soundtrack—it is amazing!
