Mark Gapinski Recommends This Wine:
The vines that produce this wine come from several vineyards with an average age of 60 years. There is a lot to unpack when tasting this wine. The nose features dark berry aromas, smoke, oaky vanilla, and spice. The palate is equally complex, featuring many of the same flavor elements. It’s the kind of wine that reveals itself slowly, with new aromas and tastes appearing with each sip. This level of complexity and sophistication is uncommon at this price point. I imagine this is what “old school” Ribera del Duero must have been like.
Dark, glistening garnet. Smoke-accented dark berries, vanilla, potpourri, and spice cake scents on the deeply perfumed nose; suggestions of woodsmoke and licorice add complexity. Fleshy, sweet and concentrated, offering intense blackberry, cherry cola, and blueberry flavors and hints of mocha and fruitcake. The floral quality reappears on a very long, subtly tannic finish that leaves mocha and exotic spice notes behind.
