A great value wine, the I Greppi 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Greppicante is 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged in second and third-use barrique. Fruit is sourced over an eight-hectare vineyard located just above sea level with a mix of sand and clay soils that are characteristic of Bolgheri. The pretty bouquet reveals cherry cream, coffee, toasted biscuit, candied violet, and more floral tones to follow. The effect is balance, and the tannins are tucked within the wine's medium-rich texture. This is an ample production of 90,000 bottles.
The I Greppi property is home to two giant lakes surrounded by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc vines. The shape of those two lakes, as seen from overhead, is depicted on the front labels of some of these wines. Those twin bodies of water play a big role in moderating the hot temperatures seen on the coast. They tend to favor winds and breezes that are important to vineyard health.
What We Thought: Very approachable and nicely rounded, Super Tuscan is medium- to full-bodied and displays plenty of blackberry and plum fruit, along with notes of dark chocolate and a touch of vanilla with supple yet dusty tannins framing the finish.
