The 2019 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Vieilles Vignes has a terrific nose of classic limestone-influenced red and black fruits, leather, truffly earth, and tobacco notes. This medium-bodied, round, balanced Castillon has ripe tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a solid finish. The blend is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, aged 12 months in used barrels.
What We Thought: This has a big, lightly earthy blackberry nose and a medium-bodied palate filled with more dark fruit and notes of licorice, tobacco, and a little espresso. It's smooth and approachable but tempered by some dusty tannins that promise improvement in the cellar or will reward a short decant.
